GRAND RAPIDS — It was as if Christopher Yuan was introducing himself at an addiction recovery meeting:  “I am a Christian and I have homosexual feelings.”

Only Yuan’s compass of faith points out no need to change his sexual orientation.  “We can’t think that we can just pray away the gay,” said Yuan, a celibate homosexual who spoke this week at Cornerstone University. “What God has called us to is not heterosexuality or homosexuality, but holy sexuality.

“Change is the freedom to choose holiness in the midst of our struggles.”

Three years after two gay-rights advocates were arrested for trespassing on its campus, Cornerstone resurrected discussion on homosexuality by welcoming Yuan to share his tale.

The son of Chinese immigrants, Yuan said he found himself attracted to males while looking at pornography as a 9-year-old.

Before converting to Christianity, Yuan said he was a promiscuous homosexual who contracted HIV and went to prison for dealing drugs.

IN HIS OWN WORDS
What Christopher Yuan said:
On biblical condemnation of homosexual activity:
“Just read it. You can’t get around it.”

On gay-affirming churches:  “The core issue is that they’ve walked away from biblical authority. Their idea of the Gospel is not the Gospel that Jesus talked about. Coming to Christ is about transformation.”

On being homosexual:  “I’ve never met anybody who ever chose to have homosexual feelings.  Same-sex attraction is not a sin in and of itself.  Sin is in how we respond to temptation.”

On anti-gay bullying:  “Can’t we just say that bullying that leads to suicide is wrong and it grieves us? Some Christians, the way they’re approaching this is wrong.”

On sin:  “That disgust that you feel (about homosexual activity) might just be a fraction of what God feels when he looks at our own sin. Our sin is just as odious in God’s eyes. We need to be convicted of our own brokenness.”

On being celibate:  “I did not leave homosexuality because it was so bad.  I left homosexuality because I found something better, and that was Jesus.”

Addressing wrong attitudes

He spoke at Cornerstone’s chapel service and later espoused a “redemptive response” to homosexuality during a talk at the adjacent Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.

“I felt that the church was telling me that I deserved a hotter place in hell, that Jesus had to hang on the cross a little bit longer, because I was gay,” said Yuan, 40, who now teaches at Moody Bible Institute and co-wrote “Out of a Far Country,” a forthcoming book on his transition to celibacy.

“A holier-than-thou attitude has never won anyone to Christ.”

Citing statistics that suggest 91 percent of non-Christians see churchgoers as anti-homosexual, Yuan said Christian schools must spark dialogue instead of fear and anxiety.  “If (anti-homosexuality) is the No. 1 negative perception, we really do as a community need to be willing to deal with this issue,” said Chip Huber, Cornerstone’s dean of student engagement and spiritual formation. “Our culture’s having this conversation every day. It’s part of our community. We can’t pretend that it’s not.”

Sexual sins

Yuan said he believes the Bible condemns homosexual activity, though not nearly as often as it reviles illicit heterosexual behavior. God in both cases calls people to holy sexuality, he said.

For Yuan, at least for now, that means celibate singleness, a lifestyle that he called on students to view as a God-honoring way of life rather than a “consolation prize” for unmarried Christians. God did not create people just to get married and have families, he said.

Yet, Yuan said his homosexuality need not consign him to singleness forever.

“We need to come around in how we view relationships,” said Yuan, stating that marriage should be less about sex than about a man and woman loving each other. “You don’t have to be heterosexual to get married. My identity in Christ is No. 1.”

The Word of God concerning Homosexuality

Romans 1:24-32
"Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, [25] who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. [26] For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.
[27]
Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. [28] And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; [29] being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, [30] backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, [31] undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; [32] who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them."

1 Corinthians 6:9-10
"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, [10] nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God."

Revelations 21:8
"But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

Galatians 5:19-21
"Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, [20] idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, [21] envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Revelations 9:21; 27
"And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. [27] But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life."

Revelations 22:15
"But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie."

I cannot dispute nor will I attempt to dispute the reasoning that individuals are born with homosexual feelings and or tendencies just as I cannot dispute the reasoning and / or reality that some individuals are born with a violent nature.  The Word of God is very clear that the natural man is a sinful man and that sinful tendencies are inherited from previous generations.  I know from  personal experience that sinful tendencies are inherited because I've had to rely God to give me victories over inherited sin tendencies.

Homosexuality is identified by our Loving God as a "sin lifestyle" that, if it is not confessed and repented of, a "practicing lifestyle homosexual individual" will not enter into Heaven.  The same warning and Eternity is true for lifestyle adulterers {both those who have a lifestyle or affairs and those who are remarried while their divorced spouse is yet living), liars, thieves, murderers, pedophiles and etc.

God isn't identifying you and I'm not writing this to make you miserable.  In love, He and I are warning you so that you can "stop" the sinful lifestyle and, as a Truly Born Again and repentant Believer, live victoriously on earth and inherit Eternal Life with Jesus Christ in Heaven.
